Projekt NYC Volunteer Paired with Deputy Commissioner Jeffery Roth
Astoria, Queens — In a proud moment for Queens youth leadership, Ian Klingman, a 12-year-old student entering 7th grade at PS 141 in Astoria, was selected to participate in New York City’s prestigious Commissioner for a Day program, held today at City Hall. Ian was paired with Jeffery Roth, Deputy Commissioner for Operations, for a full day of civic engagement, mentorship, and behind the scenes insight into how city government serves New Yorkers.
Ian’s selection is a powerful reflection of the talent, curiosity, and civic spirit emerging from Queens youth and a testament to the impact of Projekt NYC, a nonprofit based in Astoria that empowers middle and high school students through service, creative expression, and leadership development.
“This is more than just a recognition of one student, it's a reflection of what’s possible when we invest in young people from Queens,” said Ted Psahos, Executive Director of Projekt NYC and President of the 114th Precinct Community Council. “Ian’s achievement shows that our youth aren’t just participating, they're leading. And they’re being seen.”
The Commissioner for a Day initiative, hosted by NYC Service and the Mayor’s Office, pairs selected youth with senior city officials to explore public service careers and foster intergenerational dialogue. Ian’s pairing with Deputy Commissioner Roth offered a unique opportunity to learn about emergency management, city operations, and the role of leadership in keeping New York safe and responsive.
“I didn’t know what to expect, but it was amazing,” said Ian Klingman. “I got to see how the city works behind the scenes and talk about how kids like me can help make things better. It made me feel like my ideas matter.”
Ian’s journey with Projekt NYC began as a volunteer, where he contributed to youth-led service projects and creative initiatives designed to build community and amplify unheard voices. His selection for Commissioner for a Day not only highlights his individual growth but also affirms the organization’s mission to nurture civic minded, creative, and resilient young people across the borough.
As Queens continues to rise as a center for youth innovation and leadership, Projekt NYC remains committed to building platforms where young people are not only participants but architects of change.
